An education initiative of Out Innerspace, Modus Operandi bridges young emerging dance artists to the contemporary dance community, offering guidance and development of their individual dance practice. Entering in its sixth season, Modus Operandi offers both a 9 month and a multi-year curriculum to 25 dancers developing their interest and integration into the Vancouver dance community and abroad through apprenticeships, technique, creation, performance, research and dialogue not only in contemporary dance, but a variety world dance and related contemporary arts.
The ongoing vision for this program is to foster a group of diverse, eager and intelligent young artists devoted to Canadian contemporary dance. With an understanding and respect for its history, participation in its present, and sense of responsibility for its future, the upcoming generation can approach dance with thoughtful, educated and passionate voices. This program motivates the ongoing pursuit of higher dance education, generates a growing enthusiasm for the existing professional community, and nurtures the diversity and development of unique new voices. Dancers have come from across Canada, Japan, The Czech Republic, USA and Mexico to participate in Modus Operandi activities and gone on to apprentice and perform with a variety of Canadian companies including Alberta Ballet, Wen Wei Dance, The 605 Collective and Out Innerspace as well as continued on to programs and institutions including Springboard, The Netherlands Dance Theatre Summer Program, The Julliard School and Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet Program.
Opportunities for dialogue are part and parcel of the development of Out Innerspace work. The goal for discussion throughout the process is to involve the audience in the process of the work, to engage them in the discovery of ideas, the history of the movement, the desires of the performers and collaborators and to open the artists minds to the interpretations and experiences of these new audiences. These conversations with participating collaborators, presenters, peers and audience members confirm the potential of the work and the necessity of the art form while using this feedback as motivation and fuel for creation. Out Innerspace is eager to incorporate opportunities for dialogue into their projects, process and presentations.
As avid dance educators, Artistic Directors David and Tiffany enthusiastically engage all levels of dance experience with a deep interest in discovery and play. They incorporate their own dance making methods and repertoire and aim to translate them into universal and personal approaches for the participants to experiment with their own dance impulses.
With the multi-media and interdisciplinary interests of Out Innerspace and our collaborators, outreach possibilities can also include a focus on video, music, light and dance integration in the form of creation projects, open houses, demonstrations, showings, seminars and collaborations. The variety of disciplines, expertise, materials and inspiration for each Out Innerspace work offers a unique outreach context to consider and for participants to discover an even richer experience.
